PUST adds 100 students

The Pyongyang University of Science and Technology enrolled an additional 100 students at the start of the current academic semester, according to a foundation that supports the school.
The first classes at PUST began in October 2010 with 160 students enrolled, said reports at the time. The latest intake will take the student body to 260 members, assuming none of the initial students has dropped out.
That’s pretty small for a university, but PUST isn’t interesting for the number of students. The school has raised heads because of its unusual backing and plans.

Koryolink 2010 full-year results

Full-year results for Koryolink, North Korea’s only 3G cellular carrier, have been announced by Egypt’s Orascom Telecom. Orascom holds a 75 percent stake in Cheo Technology, which is the company that operates the Koryolink service. The remaining 25 percent stake is held by the government-run Korea Posts and Telecommunications Co. (KPTC).
The results show continued strong performance for the unit, which has been trying to expand use of the service by offering lower prices.

North Korean delegation visits Silicon Valley

A delegation of North Korean officials toured Silicon Valley in California, according to several news reports. The group of 12 government employees had been in the U.S. on a 2-week trip organized by the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation at University of California, San Diego.
They spent about 100 minutes inside Google from 10am on April 1. The visit was arranged with “tight security” and journalists were restricted from interacting with the North Koreans, according to a Yonhap News report.

Orascom CEO meets Kim Jong Il

The CEO of Egypt’s Orascom Telecom was given a dinner in his honor hosted by Kim Jong Il on Sunday night, KCNA reported on Monday. (Scroll down for updates)
Naguib Sawiris arrived in the North Korean capital on Friday and his meeting with the North Korean leader was the first reported details of his activities.
The report said Kim, “warmly welcomed his DPRK visit taking place at a time when Orascom′s investment is making successful progress in different fields of the DPRK, including telecommunications. He had a cordial talk with him.”

Joint editorial calls for expansion of CNC

North Korea called for a significant effort to modernize and build up its light industry sector this year in a joint editorial published in newspapers on Saturday.
“Light industry is the major front in the general offensive of this year,” said an English-language translation of the editorial carried by KCNA. “To accelerate the development of light industry is a mature requirement and most pressing task for building the country into an economic giant.”

Pyongyang Int’l Trade Fair

The 6th Pyongyang International Trade Fair kicked off on Oct. 18 and was covered by KCNA and Korea Central Television.
The event is being held at the Three Revolution Exhibition in Pyongyang and has attracted exhibitors from 17 countries. On show are “machine tools, electric and electronic equipment, vehicles, medicines, daily necessities and foodstuffs,” reported KCNA.
Among the companies in attendance are Haier, the Chinese home appliance maker, and the Deutsche Energie-Agentur (German Energy Agency).
