Voice of Korea mid-2014 schedule

North Korea’s external shortwave radio broadcaster, Voice of Korea, joins many of the world’s international broadcasters in switching to a summer frequency schedule on Sunday, March 30.

Shortwave broadcasts change frequencies numerous times during the day to take advantage of atmospheric conditions that help their broadcasts can reach the intended targets. For this reason, it’s important to know when and where a station will appear.

The broadcasts follow the same basic line-up each day.

:00 Opening signal, station identification: “This is Voice of Korea”
:01 National Anthem
:03 Song of General Kim Il Sung
:06 Song of General Kim Jong Il
:09 News, editorials (approx 15 minutes, but can be extended to full broadcast), followed by music
:30 Reminiscences of Great Leader President Kim Il Sung
:40 Music and features
:50 Editorial, special message (occasional)
:55 Frequency information
:57 Close

The Voice of Korea has traditionally refreshed these programs, including the news, once a day during the daytime in Korea.

The news output follows closely the text of English-language stories from KCNA with minor editing. It’s generally a day behind the news being put out on the domestic service in Korean.

The schedule is expected to remain current until late October 2014.

Many of the news items can be found on The Voice of Korea’s website. The station also broadcasts in French, Spanish, Arabic, German, Chinese, Japanese and Russian.

The full schedule for Voice of Korea is listed below and comes courtesy of Arnulf Piontek in Berlin.

The schedule shows the time in GMT (UTC), the language, the frequencies in kilohertz (kHz) and the target area of the broadcast. Korean-language programs are from the domestic Korea Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS).

First the schedule sorted by time, then by language.

All times are in UTC (GMT) and all frequencies in kilohertz.

  1. Signal report.

I just finished listening to your broadcast and thought to send a shortwave report using the SINPO method.

I live in Cebu, Philippines as was excited to hear your station.

The broadcast was weak down here and the voice was mostly unintelligible, but the music sounded much better.

    SINPO = 24432
    radio Yaesu ft 897D
    antenna long wife, 60 feet
    QTH Cebu, Philippines
    date Nov 12, 2014
    time 0510-0555 Z
    freq 15105 KHZ

I tried the 18650 KHZ freq but it was just too weak.

Thank you for your station and the broadcast.

    sincerely

  2. I am from Vancouver,Canada and I was glad to hear that some international women have come to the DPRK.It is hard to get the truth about the DPRK here in Canada. It is only by getting in contact with the DPRK that people here can get the real news about that country.I hope more people goes to the DPRK and sees things for themselves so that they can counter the lies that comes from the media in Canada and the USA.
